The future of the motor industry lies in electric vehicles, we all know that, but until now the marketplace has been dominated by unaffordable EVs from luxury manufacturers that the majority of us just can’t afford. Times are changing.

MG has released the fully electric version of the ZS, imaginatively named the ‘ZS EV’. The range starts from £28,495 but after the £3,500 plug-in car grant from the government and the Mg Customer Saving, the MG ZS EV is available from as little as £22,495 in the Excite trim level. The grant and customer saving also applies to Exclusive trim levels too.

Realistically, most people buy their vehicles on finance nowadays, so the ‘On The Road’ price isn’t actually that important any more. It’s the finance deals which are more important, and MG has got you covered there too.

You can now get a brand new MG ZS EV from just £259 per month with a £3,752.92 deposit at just 4.9% APR. This is on a 49-month deal and at the end of the deal, you can either pay the optional final payment, return the vehicle the MG, or part-ex the equity you have in the vehicle against a new model. Nice and flexible.

So, about the ZS EV.

Well, where to start? The MG ZS EV is a brand spanking new Nissan Qashqai-sized SUV based on the ZS which was launched in 2017. The starting price isn’t just low for an electric car, it’s lower than most SUVs on the market. Far cheaper than it’s main competitors which are the Hyundai Kona Electric and KIA E-Niro. In fact, it’s even cheaper than the much smaller Renault Zoe and Nissan Leaf!

To drive, buyers will be pleased with the off-the-line performance of the ZS EV. The 0-60mph time is just 8.5 which is very respectable and you don’t feel wanting for any more power, unlike a lot of fossil-fuelled SUVs nowadays.

In terms of electric power, the MG ZS EV has a combined range of 163 miles when measured to the WLTP standards, but around the city, you can achieve up to 231 miles which is really rather impressive. The ZS EV can take just 40 minutes to get to 80% charge from a flat battery using a 50kw public CCS point which is excellent. Those who elect to charge domestically will more than likely use a type 2 7.2 kW wall box and this will charge the battery from empty in about 6 and a half hours.

It’s all rather impressive and rather affordable, isn’t it? And we haven’t even touched on how much you’ll save in excise duty and fuel costs by owning an electric vehicle. If you’ve been sitting around waiting for an ultra-affordable electric car to come along and slash the amount you spend on your vehicle then what are you waiting for? Your prayers have been answered!
