Introduction
MG Motor UK has launched the highly anticipated all-new MGS6 EV - so expect to see it on our roads soon, writes motoring journalist Tim Barnes-Clay.
Featuring a robust 77kWh battery and available in rear and all-wheel drive configurations, the spanking new MG is a spacious, well-appointed contender in the compact crossover SUV (C-SUV) segment.
The car has already achieved an impressive five-star safety score from Euro NCAP - so that's one massive feather in its cap.
Following the recent ushering in of the MG IM6 SUV, the MGS6 EV marks a noteworthy step for the now Chinese-owned marque. So, what's it like to drive? Read on to find out.
On The Road
Handling & Performance
MG tells us that the MGS6 EV is designed to deliver impressive power and performance across its three distinct variants. That's certainly true of the MGS6 EV Trophy Dual Motor we drove at the car's launch in deepest rural Berkshire.
The all-wheel drive (AWD) model elevates performance with a powerful 361PS output, meaning 62mph arrives in a swift 5.1 seconds. Torque-wise, you're talking 540Nm. The AWD system automatically engages when traction is compromised, ensuring stability in all driving conditions. That said, push the SUV too hard into a bend and there is some body roll. However, it can deliver a pretty thrilling drive if you stick your size-11 hard on the pedal - not bad for what is a family-sized car after all, eh?
There are two other flavours of MGS6 EV: the SE Long Range, which boasts a robust single-motor power output of 245PS and a commendable combined range of 329 miles. Meanwhile, the MGS6 EV Trophy Long Range retains the same range and power output but hikes the driving experience with an array of advanced comfort and entertainment features.
These rear-wheel drive motor variants also provide impressive performance, achieving 0-62mph in a solid 7.3 seconds. All models see their top speed capped at 124mph.
All MGS6 EVs benefit from MG's Modular Scalable Platform, first rolled out with the MG4 EV, ensuring lively performance and decent handling. MG has also partnered with Continental to integrate a braking booster system designed for electric vehicles. This delivers hardcore braking performance, enabling the MG to slow from 62mph to a complete stop in just 36 metres.
The intelligent design and engineering behind the MGS6 EV optimise efficiency. Indeed, the lightweight chassis, with underbody panels, contributes to the all-important driving range (more on that in a bit).
The MG also features five energy recovery modes, including a one-pedal mode, ensuring adaptability across different driving conditions.
With five distinct drive settings - Normal, Sport, Comfort, Custom, and Snow - and a sophisticated Front MacPherson independent suspension with multi-link rear suspension, the MGS6 EV offers, as alluded to, a generally confident and dynamic driving experience. For urban manoeuvrability, the SE Long Range and Trophy Long Range feature a handy turning circle of 11.1 metres, too.
The only potential fly in the ointment is the rotary gear selector, which doesn't always respond quickly when selecting Park, Reverse, Neutral, or Drive. It's not a dealbreaker – it just seems a bit hesitant, particularly when manoeuvring to reverse park.
Styling
The MGS6 EV is the eighth all-electric vehicle launched by MG in the UK and the third model to utilise the highly acclaimed Modular Scalable Platform, first featured on the MG4 EV hatchback.
The body construction of the MGS6 EV delivers impressive strength, contributing to its high safety rating. Over 80% of the body is made from high-strength steel, with the addition of advanced high-strength steel and ultra high-strength steel.
At the front, the MGS6 EV boasts a modern appearance befitting a completely new electric SUV. This includes a split grille design inspired by the MG Cyberster convertible, integrated high and low-beam lights, and a fresh daytime running light signature. The iconic MG octagonal badge is prominently positioned on the front and features a polished, silver-effect finish.
In profile, there are silver, load-bearing roof rails, privacy glass, and a strong shoulder line. At the rear, the lower bumper features silver finish details and an integrated roof spoiler with a brake light. An attractive full-length central light bar design is positioned beneath the MG badge, cleverly optimised to provide some additional EV range.
MG has retained many of the colour choices that have proven popular with customers, including Arctic White, Camden Grey, Cosmic Silver, Dynamic Red, and Pearl Black. Additionally, the MGS6 EV introduces a new option, the eye-catching yet subtle Stratford Gold.
Tech-wise, the MGS6 EV features physical dials and buttons integrated into the central console, enabling easy control of essential functions such as heating, ventilation, and the audio system. The central console also includes a 50W ventilated wireless phone charger on the Trophy models.
Furthermore – and as revealed in the intro - the MGS6 EV has already received a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, with key assessments achieving impressive scores, including 92% for adult occupants and 84% for vulnerable road users.
There are seven airbags as standard equipment, and you're supported by MG Pilot, which offers a suite of driver assistance technologies. This includes active emergency braking, four individual lane-safety features, blind-spot detection, intelligent speed limit assist, and a driver monitoring system.
Space & Practicality
The ultra-thin battery technology used in the MGS6 EV, along with the versatility of the Modular Scalable Platform, ensures the MG will comfortably accommodate a family of five. What's more, MG has integrated over 30 storage and practicality features throughout the cabin, including a sizable compartment beneath the central console.
Both front and rear occupants enjoy excellent comfort, benefitting from generous leg and knee room, and heated front seats are standard across all three models. With 674 litres of boot space available, extending to 1,910 litres when the rear seats are folded, there's no need to 'travel light', either. Additionally, a front 'frunk' provides up to 124 litres of extra storage.
The materials and colour selections ensure that the cabin of the MGS6 EV isn’t solely about SUV spaciousness and practicality. Grey leather-style and suede-style seats with a technical carbon-effect trim or a beige option (also leather-style) with a natural effect trim are available. Meanwhile, Trophy models feature a fixed panoramic sunroof to enhance natural lighting.
The cabin's premium appearance is further boosted by a sophisticated twin-screen layout, featuring a floating 12.8-inch HD touchscreen alongside a customisable 10.25-inch HD driver display with three themes to choose from.
Ownership
Running Costs
The 77kWh battery provides an impressive driving range of up to 329 miles for the single-motor rear-wheel drive models, while the all-wheel drive Trophy Dual Motor achieves up to 301 miles.
MG claims the efficiency of both the single and dual-motor versions has been realised through over 900 rounds of simulations and 5,000 minutes of wind tunnel testing, achieving exceptional aerodynamic performance for an SUV with an impressive drag coefficient of just 0.27.
Furthermore, notable features include an active grille shutter system at the front, alongside front wheel deflectors and low-resistance aero wheel covers, which together enhance the electric range by nearly 30 additional miles.
All models can rapidly charge from 10 to 80% in just 38 minutes when using public fast chargers.
Verdict
The MGS6 EV is a significant new offering from MG, building on proven cars like the MG4 EV hatchback but also drawing inspiration from premium MGs like the dramatic Cyberster convertible.
MG's overall experience and knowledge as one of the best-selling EV manufacturers, with over 100,000 cars delivered to UK customers, ensures you won't be wasting your money. Speaking of which, the SE Long Range is priced at £37,995, the Trophy Long Range at £40,995, and the Trophy Dual Motor at £43,995. Okay - that's not as cheap as some electric vehicles, but if you're after a spacious electric car for five-up, then the MGS6 EV ticks a lot of boxes.
It isn't offensive to look at - nor is it particularly exciting to lay your eyes on. However, the MGS6 EV's performance, impressive range, safety, comfort and practicality work in its favour. All in all, if you need a family car and you're committed to going fully electric, then this MG needs to be on your shopping list.
