Rolls-Royce marks 100 years of the Phantom with a £3.5m masterpiece - a gold-detailed, hand-stitched tribute to a century of luxury and craftsmanship.

Work of art on wheels: Rolls-Royce celebrates 100 years of the Phantom with a £3.5m masterpiece

Rolls-Royce has transformed its flagship Phantom into a moving gallery to mark 100 years of the world’s most famous limousine.

Each of the 25 limited-edition Phantoms, priced at around £3.5 million, tells the story of the model’s century-long journey through intricate interior artwork and detailing - from hand-stitched embroidery to laser-etched woodwork and 24-carat gold accents.

At the front sits a solid gold Spirit of Ecstasy, while the interior is a showcase of craftsmanship on a level rarely seen, even for Rolls-Royce.

A century told through craftsmanship

It took over 40,000 hours and a team of specialist craftspeople to bring the Phantom Centenary Private Collection to life. The interior artwork alone features 160,000 embroidery stitches spread across 45 panels, alongside laser-etched detailing, 3D marquetry, ink layering and delicate 24-carat gold leaf maps tracing the Phantom’s most historic journeys.

Each car celebrates the icons, customers, and key moments that shaped Phantom’s past - from Sir Henry Royce’s Sussex home to his winter retreat in the South of France. Some designs even include hidden “Easter eggs” known only to the owners.

Every example has already been sold, making it one of the most exclusive Rolls-Royces ever built.

Engineering meets artistry

Underneath its artwork, the Phantom still delivers traditional Rolls-Royce performance. Powered by a 571hp 6.75-litre V12, it reaches 62mph in 5.4 seconds and is limited to 155mph. Fuel economy? Just 18mpg - but no one’s buying this car to save fuel.

Each comes with an Arctic White car cover trimmed in 24-carat gold, and the Spirit of Ecstasy is made from solid 18-carat gold, polished and plated to resist tarnish.

CEO Chris Brownridge describes it as “an uncompromising work of art.”

Classic Hollywood glamour

The two-tone design - Arctic White sides and a black upper body - draws inspiration from 1930s Phantoms and the golden age of Hollywood. Crushed glass in the paint adds a subtle champagne shimmer, while the ‘RR’ badges are finished in 24-carat gold and white enamel for the first time.

Each of the car’s wheels is engraved with 25 fine lines, representing the number of cars in the series - and collectively forming 100, to mark the Phantom’s centenary.

A storytelling interior

Inside, the Phantom becomes a literal canvas for storytelling. The rear cabin is upholstered in fine fabrics inspired by the 1926 “Phantom of Love,” while the front seats feature laser-etched sketches referencing Rolls-Royce milestones - from the original 1923 prototype (“Seagull”) to the brand’s 2003 BMW relaunch (“Roger Rabbit”).

Across the doors, 3D marquetry depicts maps, landscapes and routes connected to the Phantom’s past - with each road hand-cut in gold leaf just 0.1 micrometres thick.

Highlights include:

  • Le Rayol-Canadel-sur-Mer, Sir Henry Royce’s winter retreat, shown on the rear doors with local foliage recreated in wood and thread.
  • West Wittering, his Sussex home, etched into the front panels.
  • The 4,500-mile Australian crossing by the first Goodwood-built Phantom.

Each site is marked with a single gold-leaf dot only 2.76mm wide - a perfect symbol of Rolls-Royce precision.

Stars that tell a story

Look up and you’ll find the Phantom’s famous Starlight Headliner, reimagined with 440,000 stitches that trace key symbols from the marque’s history - from Henry Royce’s mulberry tree and the brand’s honeybee hives to the “Phantom Rose” grown exclusively at Goodwood.

Hidden among the constellations are subtle nods to design secrets from “The Bank” - Rolls-Royce’s clandestine 1990s London studio where the modern Phantom was born.

The Anthology Gallery

Spanning the dashboard is the Anthology Gallery - a sculptural row of 50 3D-printed aluminium “pages” etched with quotes from a century of Phantom press coverage, symbolising a book of living history.

Head of Bespoke Design Martina Starke said the team spent a year studying the brand’s archives:

“We distilled hundreds of stories into 77 motifs, each one capturing a defining moment in Phantom’s journey.”

The ultimate collector’s edition

Built at Goodwood, West Sussex, the Phantom Centenary Private Collection is not just a car - it’s a physical archive of one of motoring’s most storied nameplates.
