Take note! The Honda SUV E:Prototype is a new, fully electric, sports-utility vehicle that premiered at Auto Shanghai 2021. But why is this motor show exhibit noteworthy? Why care about a prototype when there are production cars nearby? And, why care about a vehicle that is on display many, many miles from the UK?

Such questions can be answered simultaneously. The Honda SUV E:Prototype reveals – in general terms – what to expect from the manufacture in the future. In other words, it is significant as production cars that will be available globally are likely to be inspired by the prototype.

Styling

The Honda SUV E:Prototype looks restrained for a sports-utility vehicle. It is not overly muscular. It is not in-your-face aggressive. Instead, it has clean lines and a mature vibe.

  • Honda illuminated badges (front and rear)
  • rear lights that span the width of the vehicle
  • small door mirrors
  • lights below the front and rear doors
  • concealed charge port (likely behind a flap in the front)
  • flush door handles that optimise aerodynamic efficiency.

Specification

Honda has not revealed much technical information about its new prototype. Mysteries include how much power it has, the maximum range per charge, the charge time, and whether it has all-wheel drive. However, the manufacturer claimed this sports-utility vehicle allows motorists to ‘feel the joy of driving in abundance’.

Honda Connect is a confirmed feature, though. This third-generation user interface includes a touchscreen on the dashboard, voice recognition, smartphone connectivity, and over-the-air software updates which might improve the vehicle in due course. Such features are ‘fresh and fun-filled', the motor manufacturer stated.

Final thoughts

The Honda SUV E:Prototype is a very interesting car. It is not a crazy, far out, ridiculous concept conceived for a motor show that has little relevance to motorists in the real world. Sooner rather than later, the manufacturer is likely to launch a similar model you can actually purchase. Watch this space!
