Departments will still be able to apply for exemptions, but they’ve been given extra time to do so

Labour plans for all government cars to be electric by 2027

Labour has announced that if elected, it will require all government departments to switch their fleets to fully electric vehicles by 2027. The goal is to phase out petrol and diesel cars as part of wider efforts to cut emissions.

Departments will still be able to apply for exemptions, but they’ve been given extra time to do so.

This new plan builds on an earlier target set by the Department for Transport, which aimed for 25% of cars in central government fleets to be electric by 2022. The updated goal is for 100% of central government cars and vans to be zero-emission by 2027. It supports the wider strategy laid out in the government’s “Decarbonising Transport: A Better, Greener Britain” plan.
