London’s Ulez scrappage scheme set to end next month

The scrappage scheme for vehicles that don’t meet Ultra Low Emission Zone (Ulez) standards is closing in three weeks, according to Transport for London (TfL).

So far, £186 million has been paid out to almost 54,000 people who successfully scrapped older, more polluting vehicles that would otherwise cost £12.50 per day to drive in London.

Of the 61,000 applications for vans and minibuses, less than a third were successful, compared to nearly half of the 75,000 applications for cars and motorcycles.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said, "I am proud that the scrappage scheme - the biggest in the UK - has supported so many Londoners to switch to cleaner, greener vehicles."

If you live in a London borough and your vehicle is non-compliant, you can claim up to £2,000 for a car and up to £7,000 for a van or minibus, with higher amounts available for charities and disabled Londoners.

The deadline to apply is 7 September, and TfL guarantees that any application submitted before then will be "guaranteed to be processed and reviewed for eligibility". The scheme was expanded to cover most Londoners on 4 August 2023, just before the Ulez expansion.

Almost £70 million was paid to the owners of over 36,000 cars and motorcycles, while nearly 18,000 van and minibus owners received £116.5 million. Additionally, 232 charities received a total of £1.7 million in grants, and over 330 vehicles were donated to Ukraine.
