Ford Pro, the commercial vehicle division of Ford, has revealed details about the upcoming 2024 revision of the Ford Transit. Among the notable enhancements is the integration of 5G connectivity and the introduction of Ford PowerUp, an over-the-air software update system.
The modernisation extends beyond software updates in both the new Transit and the electric E-Transit models. All variants now feature a standard 12-inch touchscreen display, with a Connected Navigation offering real-time traffic data. There's also an eight-inch digital instrument cluster as part of the standard package.
Built specifically with delivery in mind, the Delivery Assist automated technology recognises routine tasks and, in automatic models, engages the Park mode, switches off the engine, activates hazard lights and locks unused doors when the driver exits the vehicle or retrieves a parcel. Upon the driver's return and brake pedal activation, this process is reversed, potentially saving a substantial 20 seconds per parcel delivery. For a driver handling 150 deliveries daily it's easy to see why this would be attractive.
From a safety perspective, standard equipment includes pre-collision assist with autonomous emergency braking, lane assist, and Intelligent Speed Assist.
There are six optional assistance packages including features such as blind-spot detection with cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control for congested traffic, and auto park assist aided by 360-degree cameras.
The front-wheel drive Transit now offers an eight-speed automatic transmission option although that slightly increases the vehicle's weight.
Counter to that, redesigned wheel hubs contribute to a reduction of up to 27kg in unsprung weight and all models are now fitted with 16-inch wheels as standard.
Notably, the front-wheel drive Transit now has a maximum front axle weight of 2,000kg - particularly useful for those that carry horse-boxes or are low-loaders.
We'll get more on this, including a test drive, as soon as one becomes available.
