7 Red Hot Cars Road Tested by Regit
Take a look at some of the performance cars we’ve been putting to the test recently
7. Audi RS4 Avant
Estate cars aren’t meant to be this good. It’s beyond belief that a car this practical and family-friendly can pack so much performance. This really is a car exclusively for the coolest parents at the school gates. We took the RS4 Avant out for a spin way back in February and we loved every minute of putting it through its paces. The highly strung 2.9-litre petrol engine packs plenty of promise and delivers everything you’d ever want from an estate car and much, much more. Estate cars simply shouldn’t be this capable. The RS4 will do the 0-60 spring in just 4.1 seconds and on to a top speed limited to 155 mph - not that you’ll ever need it.The RS4 Avant is on sale exclusively as an estate and prices start from £62,215 and you can find our full review online here.
6. Ford Mustang
It took a long, long time for the Ford Mustang to arrive in the UK but we are so glad it did. The new Mustang is finally built to suit European roads (and European efficiency standards) and we are extremely happy. We tested the latest model, which had been gifted some mid-life nipping and tucking, back in March and we were besotted. It may be a new car but it still boasts those unmistakable lines that have made the Mustang such an iconic car. The Mustang is still best served with a V8 engine and it offers enough performance to make the car extremely lively while turning heads. The updated Mustang is on sale now and prices start from £37,645 and you can read our full review here.
5. Ford Fiesta ST
The best small hot-hatch on the market? Probably. The Fiesta ST outshines it’s spicy rivals like the Polo GTI, Peugeot 208 GTi and Renaultsport Clio thanks to its ridiculously well-behaved chassis and of course the snorty EcoBoost engine under the bonnet. This Fiesta ST has to be one of, if not the cheapest way of getting pure motoring thrills, with prices starting from just £19,495 and there are plenty of affordable lease deals available. For that, you get a 3 door model in the ST-1 spec with 200 horsepower. The ST-1 is pretty well packaged and does provide enough kit to really have fun with, but we’d recommend looking at the ST-2 model which comes with a number of improvements but most importantly it comes with ultra-supportive bucket seats. The Fiesta ST is on sale now and you can read our full review online here.
4. Mercedes-Benz CLS
Mercedes released the 3rd generation of their ultra-luxurious 4-door coupe/saloon CLS this year and in October we were privileged to put it to the test on UK roads. It is a beautifully crafted thing with a sloping roofline, smooth lines and a low profile, it slices through the air majestically. The interior is something to behold too. Arguably the most delightful interior of any premium saloon on the market right now, bordering on Rolls-Royce levels of luxury. The CLS is on sale now and prices start from £58,525. To find out more (and stare at a few more photos of this gorgeous land-barge) then you can read our full review on the site here.
3. Audi RS5
The no-nonsense Audi super-coupé has ditched it’s demonic 4.2 litre V8 and replaced it with a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged unit that takes the car from 0-60 mph in just 3.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 174 mph. We tested the Carbon Pack edition back in August and we were blown away. The Carbon Pack, as you may have guessed, means that the car comes loaded with Carbon Fibre and it costs about £13,000 more than the entry level. Other than turbocharged performance, the new 2.9-litre engine is also noticeably more economical and the new RS5 will now return a modest 32.5 mpg on the combined cycle… if you behave yourself. The RS5 Coupe is on sale now from £62,335 and you can find our full review here.
2. Maserati Ghibli
The most accessible and affordable Maserati ever is now on sale in the form of the Ghibli. It’s an executive saloon that turns it’s nose up at the convention of slow, uninspiring diesel saloons. It is available as a diesel, but it’s a 3.0 litre Diesel with a lovely 270 horsepower. The real stars, however, are the two 3.0 litre petrol engines which will set your morning commute alight. The Ghibli has been out on sale since 2014 and has had a few improvements along the way. Happily, we can report it is going down a storm with the general public, as Maserati has now shifted almost 100,000 of them. It is on sale now and prices start from £52,825. You can find our full review online here.
1. McLaren 600LT
And last but certainly not least is the McLaren 600LT. A British supercar that pushes the boundaries as few other cars have ever done before. We had the pleasure of putting the new 600LT to test around the Hungaroring near Budapest in October and, well, we’ve still not calmed down yet. The 600 LT is the first small-McLaren to boast the ‘LT’ initials (which stands for Long Tail) and it is a real belter. Performance has been taken through the roof now, with this model going from 0-60 mph in just 2.9 seconds. All of this power comes from a 3.9-litre V8 engine which throws out a staggering 592 horsepower. The 600 LT is on sale now but it’s rather expensive, with prices starting from £185,500, but you can read our full report here in the meantime while you start saving up…
