Europe's best-selling car has finally gone hybrid, and in true Dacia style it's done it for less money than anyone else, with a Sandero that does up to 67mpg and costs less than plenty of small petrol cars.

Dacia Sandero hybrid is the UK's cheapest hybrid at £17,995
  • The new Dacia Sandero Hybrid 155 costs from £17,995, which makes it the cheapest hybrid car on sale in the UK.
  • The chunkier Sandero Stepway Hybrid starts at £19,295.
  • Dacia claims up to 67mpg for the Sandero and 64mpg for the Stepway, with up to 40% lower fuel use than the petrol version.
  • It's a self-charging hybrid, so it never needs plugging in, and it can run on electric power for up to 80% of town driving, Dacia says.
  • Orders opened on 4 November.

The Dacia Sandero is now the cheapest hybrid car you can buy in the UK, with prices starting at £17,995 for the new Sandero Hybrid 155, which went on sale on 4 November. The rugged-looking Sandero Stepway Hybrid costs from £19,295, and Dacia claims up to 67mpg for the regular car and 64mpg for the Stepway. That undercuts the MG3 Hybrid+, which started at £19,245 at the beginning of this year, and the Toyota Yaris Hybrid at £23,140.

Dacia Sandero hybrid price and trims

There are four hybrid versions, and you can't get one in the cheapest Essential trim, so the range starts with the mid-spec Expression.

Model Price
Sandero Hybrid 155 Expression £17,995
Sandero Hybrid 155 Journey £19,295
Sandero Stepway Hybrid 155 Expression £19,295
Sandero Stepway Hybrid 155 Extreme £20,595

Even the Expression gets air conditioning, cruise control and a 10-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, though you'll have to live with steel wheels. The Journey adds alloys, a digital instrument display, heated seats, a heated steering wheel and wireless phone charging, which is a lot of winter comfort for £19,295. The Stepway gets tougher-looking body cladding and roof bars, and the top Extreme model adds keyless entry, a 360-degree camera and a grip control mode for muddy tracks.

Dacia Sandero hybrid fuel economy and running costs

This is where the hybrid earns its keep. Dacia says the Sandero Hybrid 155 does up to 67mpg and uses up to 40% less fuel than the petrol Sandero, and it can run on electric power alone for up to 80% of the time in town, which is where small cars spend most of their lives. On those figures, someone covering 7,000 miles a year would spend about £830 on fuel at today's average petrol price, and because it's a self-charging hybrid, there's no charger to buy and nothing to plug in.

After the first year you'll pay the standard £200 a year in vehicle tax, and at well under £40,000 there's no Expensive Car Supplement to worry about.

Dacia Sandero hybrid engine and performance

The Sandero uses the same Hybrid 155 system as the bigger Dacia Duster and Bigster, pairing a 1.8-litre petrol engine with two electric motors and a small 1.4kWh battery for a total of 155PS. That's a big jump for a Sandero, and it does 0 to 62mph in 8.3 seconds with a top speed of 112mph. It only comes as an automatic, and the extra pulling power means it can tow up to 1,100kg, more than the petrol version can manage.

Dacia Sandero hybrid vs MG3 Hybrid+ and Toyota Yaris

The MG3 Hybrid+ has been the go-to budget hybrid since 2024, and it's still a strong rival, with more power and MG's long warranty, while the Toyota Yaris Hybrid has a reputation for reliability that's hard to beat. But the Sandero is cheaper than both and, at 410 litres, its boot is bigger than either, so if you want the most car for the least money, the Dacia is hard to argue with.

What we like

  • The cheapest hybrid on sale in the UK
  • Up to 67mpg with no need to plug in
  • A big boot and better towing than the petrol car

What worries us

  • Not available in the cheapest Essential trim
  • Automatic only
  • The base Expression makes do with steel wheels

Our verdict

The Sandero has always been about getting a lot of car for not much money, and the hybrid takes that further, with up to 67mpg, more power and a price that undercuts every other hybrid on sale. We'd go for the £19,295 Journey, because the heated seats, heated wheel and alloys are well worth the extra, and it still costs less than an entry-level Yaris by thousands.
