This Christmas, drivers are being encouraged to ensure their vehicles are in top-notch condition, before making journeys to see family.

Essential car checks for a safe Christmas journey

AA statistics indicate that a third of all car breakdowns in the UK occur during the festive season. With the current financial strain on many Brits due to the cost of living crisis, expensive car repairs are likely the last thing anyone wants on their Christmas list.

During this winter season, motorists may find themselves shelling out an average of £156 for breakdown repairs. Hence, it's crucial to inspect your car before embarking on any journey.

Check your tyre tread depth

Legally, your tyres should maintain a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm. However, during winter weather with snowy and icy roads, it's advisable to increase it to 3.0mm. Most experts recommend replacing tyres once they fall below this threshold. To assess your tread depth's legality, try the 20p method.

Top up your oil

A significant 33% of UK vehicles inspected by mechanics are found to have "dangerously low oil," posing a risk of substantial engine damage or a breakdown during your journey. This quick task takes just a minute and doesn't require assistance—simply pull out the dipstick and ensure the fluid reaches the correct indicator line.

Cool your engine

Engine coolant, a blend of antifreeze and water, is essential to prevent your engine from freezing in colder temperatures. If the coolant level doesn't fall between the minimum and maximum levels on the tank upon inspection, promptly take your vehicle to a garage before it escalates into a more severe problem.

Inspect your battery

While checking your battery is a fundamental aspect of vehicle maintenance, its efficiency can significantly decrease in cold weather. Last winter, 27% of breakdowns were directly attributed to battery issues. Most mechanics offer quick and affordable checks.

Assess your wipers

Snow, ice, grit, and other debris not only affect your visibility while driving but can also damage your windscreen wipers. Conduct a close examination for any splits along the blades, and if you find any, replace them promptly.

Clean your lights

Visibility is paramount during winter touring trips. Clean your front and rear lights for maximum brightness, and don't forget to inspect your indicators. Simply replace any bulbs that require changing.
