The Ferrari 812 Competizone makes written words seem inadequate. Nouns, verbs, and adjectives cannot define its magnificence. Ferrari tried, though. It is the ‘ultimate expression’ of an ‘extreme front engine sports coupe’, the manufacturer suggested. After all, this beast is the limited edition, special series car derived from the Ferrari 812 Superfast.
Ferrari also said its new car ‘encapsulates and epitomises’ decades of experience on race tracks and is a ‘perfect marriage of performance, form, and functionality’. The manufacturer also claimed it is aimed at the ‘most passionate collectors and connoisseurs’ and ‘guarantees peerless driving pleasure’. Somehow though, even these gushing words fail to capture the car’s majesty.
Performance
Perhaps numbers can come to the rescue as language seems inadequate. The 812 Competizone has a 6.5 litre V12 engine that produces 819 bhp, at 9,250 rpm. It also has 692 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm. Such figures are vast and guarantee extraordinary performance. Expect 0 to 62 mph in 2.85 seconds, for example. Expect 0 to 124 mph in 7.5 seconds and a high speed of 211 mph.
Engine revisions
The Competizone’s engine is a significantly re-engineered version of the unit in the 812 Superfast. It incorporates countless innovations that increase the maximum revolutions, optimise the fluid dynamics of the intake and combustion systems, and minimise friction. Expect ‘boundless power’, the manufacturer stated. The technical innovations include:
- optimised intake system to help the engine breath
- lighter crank shafts and connecting rods to save weight
- carbon coating on the pistons to reduce friction.
Further strengths
The Ferrari 812 Competizone has more strengths words cannot quantify. They also ensure it stands out from its sibling, the 812 Superfast. Highlights include the independent four-wheel steering that helps the car turn quickly, sharply, and with extreme confidence. This complements revised aerodynamics, special tyres, improved engine cooling, and weight reduction. It is 38 kg lighter.
Open-top counterpart
The Ferrari 812 Competizone has an open-top counterpart that launched at the same time. The Competizone A has a targa top roof which is constructed from lightweight, stylish, and distinctive carbon fibre. Once removed, the roof can be stored in the car so it is easily accessible if the weather takes a turn for the worse.
Ferrari comments
Ferrari summarised its new cars. ‘The driver is one with the car regardless of whether it is on road or track’, it said. ‘Maximum fun behind the wheel and driving exhilaration are ensured at all speeds.’ Good words. But even they cannot capture the magnificence.
