The app utilises a blend of computer vision, generative AI, satellite imaging, and various data feeds like weather reports and location targeting.

Honda has introduced a ground-breaking app tailored for the visually impaired, dubbed 'Honda Scenic Audio'. This app leverages advanced AI technologies to narrate the sights along a car journey. Currently, a select group of visually impaired individuals is beta testing this innovative solution.

Developed in collaboration with the Perkins School for the Blind and the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind, the app utilises a blend of computer vision, generative AI, satellite imaging, and various data feeds like weather reports and location targeting. Its goal is to provide accurate descriptions of the surroundings outside the car window.

But it's not just about the scenery. The app also factors in comparisons of height, terrain, and temperature to offer a comprehensive picture, enhancing the enjoyment of car travel for occupants.

Phil Hruska, senior manager at Honda Marketing, emphasised the app's potential: "By creating a detailed narrative of the roadside views during a scenic driving experience, the Honda Scenic Audio app can help to open imaginations and enhance the joy of car travel to blind and visually impaired passengers."

According to Honda's demonstration video, people with disabilities constitute the world's largest minority, with approximately 285 million individuals worldwide being blind or visually impaired. Sadly, they often miss out on experiencing the changing landscapes that accompany some of the most scenic road trips.

Stacey Lacey from the Perkins School's Howe Innovation Centre highlighted, "It's the only minority group that anyone can join at any moment in their lives."
