Great news for crash dummies... the Hyundai i20 retains the existing EURO NCAP rating from previous safety tests performed by Euro NCAP – the independent vehicle assessors. In fact, this supermini earned the maximum five-star rating overall making it one of the safest in its class. Good stuff. The five-star rating breaks down to scores of 88% for adult occupant protection, 83% for child occupants, and 64% for pedestrians. It also earned 86% for the safety assist category, which includes toys such as the i20's electronic stability programme. That helps keep this supermini pointing in the right direction if the driver makes an error. It is a fantastic feature.

The Hyundai i20 has other virtues to complement its safety credentials. It has reasonably composed handling, for starters, and the ride is comfortable. It also has a class competitive 295-litre boot. And check-out the styling - this urban run-around looks bang- up-to-date. The pleasing equipment specification is a further strength. Even the basic trim has: power steering, air-con, MP3 playback, and that excellent electronic stability programme. This run-around is clearly a viable alternative to its more familiar competitors, particularly as it achieved Euro NCAP's maximum five star rating. Prices start from £9,895.
