Purpose and benefits
The IONIQ Hybrid is a small, family class, car that is stylish, reasonably spacious and comfortable. Its strength is to blend the best features of a car that is only powered by a traditional, internal combustion, engine and an electric car that is only powered by a motor. It eliminates their respective weaknesses, too.
Note its 1.6-litre petrol engine, for starters. It ensures the vehicle travels hundreds of miles before refuelling and that it can be topped-up in any town within minutes. The same cannot be said for every electric vehicle. Why? Because there is far less refuelling infrastructure and the process takes much, much, longer.
The 2018 Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid also has an electric motor to minimise the engine’s workload. It therefore reduces fuel consumption, emissions and expense. It can even power the car single-handed in certain circumstances. The key statistics include:
- Average fuel consumption: 78.5 mpg
- Carbon emissions: 84 g/km
- Total power: 141 PS
- Transmission: 6-speed automatic
The Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid has further innovations that minimise fuel consumption, pollution and financial expense. Highlights include:
- Highly efficient aerodynamics that minimise drag
- Charges the battery that powers the motor while in motion
- Eco Mode optimises the response of the transmission, etcetera
- Strong, light, steel to minimise the vehicle’s weight
Trims and prices
The IONIQ Hybrid SE costs £21,790 (on the road). Automatic emergency braking, climate control and lane departure warning are among its standard features. The Premium trim also has satellite navigation and a wireless phone charge pad. All for £23,590. The Premium SE adds automatic windscreen wipers and costs from £25,390.
IONIQ Plug-In Hybrid
The IONIQ Plug-In Hybrid is a slightly different vehicle that builds on its sibling’s strengths. It therefore has a larger battery to power the electric motor which further reduces your reliance on the engine. Expect to cover 39 miles via the motor only, to average 256.8 mpg and to emit carbon at a rate of 26 g/km.
Furthermore, the battery can be charged via a cable while parked rather than only while in motion. This further reduces any use of the petrol engine. New IONIQ Plug-In Hybrid trims and prices are:
- Premium: £28,395
- Premium SE: is £30,195
