Jaguar is preparing to unveil its first all-new electric car of its controversial new era, with more than 1,000bhp and a price expected to top £120,000.

Jaguar Type 01 set to reveal its £130,000 EV

Jaguar is about to show the production version of the Type 01, the electric grand tourer at the centre of its dramatic reinvention.

The British marque has promised more than 1,000bhp, 23-inch wheels and 360 patented features, while the car is expected to cost around £130,000 when it reaches customers.

Jaguar managing director Rawdon Glover has described the launch as one of the biggest moments in the company's history.

He has also suggested the finished car should make an impression when it appears on British roads, saying Jaguar wants drivers to feel something when one approaches from behind on the motorway.

The unveiling comes almost two years after Jaguar caused a huge stir with its new branding and the 'Copy Nothing' campaign.

Jaguar Type 01 price and launch date

The Type 01 is expected to sit firmly in the ultra-luxury EV market, putting it up against cars from brands including Aston Martin and Bentley.

Jaguar has yet to confirm a final UK price, although reports have placed the car at around £130,000. That would make it considerably more expensive than the electric Jaguars currently familiar to UK buyers.

The production car follows the Type 00 concept shown in 2024, which previewed the radical design direction Jaguar intends to take as it moves further upmarket.

Glover has acknowledged the attention surrounding the company's transformation and said Jaguar understands the criticism surrounding its new direction.

The company has also made clear that it wants the Type 01 to establish a new identity for the brand, with the car expected to become the first major production model of its electric-only era.

Jaguar Type 01 design and interior

The Type 01 has an imposing presence, with a low roofline, large 23-inch wheels and a deliberately minimalist exterior.

Jaguar's new design language includes a horizontal graphic where the bonnet meets the windscreen, along with linear detailing intended to become a signature feature of its future models.

The cabin follows the same philosophy.

At its centre is a spine running through the interior, creating four individual seating areas and giving the dashboard and centre console a distinctive architectural appearance.

Jaguar has also shown a wide high-definition display stretching across the dashboard instead of relying on a conventional central touchscreen.

A smaller digital display sits within the central spine and handles functions including the climate control and heated seats.

The steering wheel features a twin-spoke design with illuminated controls, while Jaguar has used brass-inspired finishes and its redesigned leaper emblem to add some visual contrast to the otherwise pared-back cabin.

An expansive panoramic roof is also intended to give the interior a more open feel.

Jaguar Type 01 technology and features

One of the Type 01's more unusual features is its Digital ClearSight Rear View Display.

Instead of a conventional rear window, a roof-mounted camera feeds an image to a screen positioned at the base of the windscreen.

Jaguar says the system forms part of the car's wider interior technology package, with concealed storage and controls designed to keep the cabin free from visual clutter.

The company has also placed considerable emphasis on the seating position.

The 120kWh battery pack is split within the floor structure, allowing Jaguar to position the seats lower in the car than is common in many large electric vehicles.

That contributes to the Type 01's low 1.4-metre roofline while helping create the more driver-focused feel Jaguar is targeting.

Jaguar Type 01 performance and range

Power comes from a three-motor electric drivetrain, with one motor at the front and two at the rear.

Jaguar says the system will produce more than 1,000bhp, while advanced torque vectoring will monitor grip and wheel slip up to 1,000 times per second.

The 120kWh battery is expected to provide around 430 miles of real-world range, although Jaguar has yet to confirm an official final figure.

The battery's unusual split-cell design also creates additional space for rear passengers, helping Jaguar package the low-slung body without sacrificing as much interior room.

If the claimed figures make production, the Type 01 will be a seriously powerful EV.

The bigger question is whether Jaguar can make that performance feel as sophisticated as the company promises.

Why the Jaguar rebrand caused so much controversy

The Type 01 arrives after one of the most divisive marketing campaigns in recent motoring history.

Jaguar's 2024 'Copy Nothing' campaign abandoned much of the visual identity that had defined the brand for decades. The familiar leaping cat logo was redesigned, while the company's traditional typography was replaced with a new mixed-case treatment.

The campaign featured colourful imagery and models walking through a stylised landscape, with no new Jaguar car shown prominently.

That decision triggered a wave of criticism online, with figures including Donald Trump, Nigel Farage and Elon Musk commenting on the direction Jaguar was taking.

Trump described the rebrand as a 'total disaster', while Musk questioned whether Jaguar still sold cars.

The criticism has continued to follow the brand, making the Type 01 considerably more important than a conventional new model launch.

Jaguar Type 01 verdict

Jaguar has taken a huge gamble with the Type 01.

The company is asking buyers to accept a completely new visual identity, an ultra-luxury price and an electric-only future at the same time. That is a lot riding on one car.

On paper, the ingredients are certainly eye-catching. More than 1,000bhp, a 120kWh battery, three electric motors and a cabin unlike anything else in Jaguar's current range give the Type 01 plenty of ammunition.

But the most important test will come when the production car reaches customers.

Jaguar has spent the past two years insisting it knows where the brand needs to go. The Type 01 is where that argument finally has to stand on its own four wheels.
