London traffic hit record levels in 2025 as drivers lost nearly six days in jams, keeping the capital the world’s slowest city.

London ranked worst city for traffic for third year in a row

If you’ve spent the last year staring at the bumper of a Prius while fuming on the Marylebone Road, you aren't alone. London traffic congestion has officially reclaimed its crown as the world’s most frustrating commute.

According to the latest TomTom Traffic Index, the average 10km trek in Central London now takes a staggering 37 minutes and 20 seconds. That’s not just a slow drive; it’s a test of human endurance.

Last year, the typical London driver wasted 141 hours, nearly six full days, just sitting stationary. When you factor in the price of petrol and the sheer mental drain, it’s a heavy price to pay for a city that’s supposedly 'moving forward'.

Why is London so slow?

It’s the question every cabbie and commuter asks. The data suggests a perfect storm of factors. The expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) and the rollout of 20mph limits across most boroughs have fundamentally changed how traffic flows. Throw in a series of disruptive Tube strikes that forced everyone into their cars, and you’ve got a recipe for total gridlock.

But it isn't just about policy. Our roads weren't built for the sheer volume of delivery vans and Ubers we see today. While Sadiq Khan’s critics point to a 'war on motorists', City Hall argues that journey times haven't actually dipped below 2019 levels. They’re blaming the endless sea of roadworks instead. To be fair, anyone who’s tried to navigate the Blackwall Tunnel recently might agree.

How the rest of the UK compares

London might be the headline act, but it isn't the only city struggling with the brakes.

Belfast: Currently tops the UK list for the most congested city outside the capital.

Oxford: A rare success story. Since introducing a £5 congestion charge, they’ve actually seen traffic flow improve.

Cambridge & Brighton: Both cities are seeing major slowdowns as more workers return to the office full-time.

Is there a way out of the jam?

Transport for London (TfL) says they’re on it. They’re leaning heavily into smarter traffic signal software that adjusts in real-time to clear bottlenecks. There’s also an expansion of the 'Lane Rental' scheme, which charges utility companies more for digging up busy roads during peak hours. It’s a start, but will it be enough to get us moving faster than a brisk walk?

For now, the reality for Londoners is simple: if you have to drive, leave early, check your Waze religiously, and make sure your Spotify playlist is long enough to survive the A40.

Why this matters now

As the UK government pushes for more 'Active Travel' and local councils tighten restrictions, the tension between drivers and urban planners is reaching a breaking point. With fuel duty freezes always on the chopping block and the cost of idling in traffic rising, your morning commute is becoming one of your biggest annual expenses.
