What a tease! The Mercedes-Benz EQS is a new, high performance, luxury electric saloon with remarkable styling that demands respect. Maybe! Why only maybe? Because the manufacturer has ‘hinted’ what this electric car looks like rather than confirmed it. This is deliberate. Mercedes, after all, wants to create a sense of anticipation before the new saloon is officially revealed.
Regular Regit readers got stuck into to the interior we showcased last week, and, now Mercedes-Benz has released teaser shots to whet the appetite. Such pictures show the car from various angles – but it is in disguise. Key parts have been camouflaged. Consider the finish, for example. It includes lines and swirls which make it hard to distinguish detail. Furthermore, components such as the lights have been partly obscured to conceal their shape, size, etc.
Nonetheless, the teaser pictures provide some insight. The Mercedes-Benz EQS is big and imposing. It also has flush door handles to optimise aerodynamic efficiency, a heavily raked windscreen, and coupe-like rear. Also, rather than a large open grille the front of the vehicle is more enclosed. Why? Because there is no petrol engine to keep cool so less airflow is required.
The teaser shots reveal more. Note the body panels. They are typically smooth rather than sharply creased. In addition, the front lights span the width of the vehicle which is stylish, modern, and distinctive. Rumours suggest the rear lights have a similar look. Further strengths include the large wheels, purposeful stance, and glass roof that floods the cabin with light.
What, therefore, is the overall impression likely to be once the camouflage is gone? The Mercedes-Benz EQS is likely to blend old and new. Expect it to look traditional enough to attract the brand’s typical customers, for example. Also, the styling is likely modern enough to emphasise that the vehicle is electric, up-to-date, and a clear departure from the more traditional alternatives.
Power, performance, battery, availability
The car’s technical specification has not been fully revealed this far from launch. However there are some facts, hints, and unsubstantiated rumours that suggest what to expect. The EQS is very fast, for starters. It is extremely powerful. It can cover hundreds of miles per-charge. The rumoured specification includes:
- power: 470 PS (759 Nm torque)
- 0 to 62 mph: 4.5 seconds
- battery: 108 kWh
- range per-charge: 478 miles
- price: £80,000 upwards
- availability: August 2021.
