We can finally see it! The all-new BMW M240i xDrive Coupe was revealed last week at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed. Despite costing £45,795, this fast, light and powerful sports car will no doubt get the blood pumping. Here's a few details...
Engine
The M240i xDrive has a three litre, 374hp, six cylinder, petrol engine that propels it to 62mph in 4.3 seconds. That is mighty quick and enough to make your pulse race. The top speed is electronically limited to 155mph. The BMW is also fairly fuel efficient considering it is a fast sports car. It averages 34.9mpg.
Gearbox
The three-litre engine is teamed to eight-speed automatic transmission. This gearbox gives you options. You can cruise in full auto when you want to relax or alternatively, select gears manually via paddles behind the steering wheel. The gearbox also has ‘sprint’ mode to maximise acceleration. Simply pull the left paddle for a second to engage the lowest usable gear.
All-wheel drive
The BMW M240i xDrive Coupe has all-wheel drive to optimise traction, stability, and agility. Typically, the engine’s power is sent to the real wheels only. However, as needed, it is transferred to the front wheels too. This ensures ‘any tendency for oversteer or understeer is nipped in the bud’, the motor manufacturer stated.
Styling
The BMW Coupe looks purposeful, modern, and arguably more attractive than some of the brand’s other cars. It has a long bonnet that oozes power and is complemented by the roofline that sweeps sharply down from the B-pillars. The car also has a prominent kidney grille, a spoiler at the rear and stylish alloy wheels you peer through to see the large brake discs.
There are vertical flaps behind the grille that close to improve aerodynamic efficiency then open if the engine needs additional cooling. And elements like flush door handles only improve performance further as do vanes and splitters that channel air and efficient wheels. The underneath of the car is almost completely sealed, too.
Tamer siblings
The BMW M240i xDrive is the top-spec car in the range, so it has tamer siblings with fewer features. The 220i has a 2.0 litre, 184hp, petrol engine and hits 62mph in 7.5 seconds. All from £34,980. There is a diesel, too. The 220d has a 2.0 litre, 190hp, engine and reaches 62mph in 6.9 seconds. Prices start from £36,900.
