The new Peugeot RCZ is the best sports coupé for motorists obsessed with quirky aerodynamics. This is due to the striking roof and rear window lines which, according to Peugeot, form a 'single, fluid, streamlined envelope' to improve aerodynamics. Known as the 'double bubble', this resembles a shallow 'S' shape and makes the RCZ more distinctive than a bright pink skyscraper.
In addition to its stunning styling, the new RCZ is available with a range of capable engines. These are the 1.6-litre petrol with outputs of 156 and 200bhp, and the economical 2.0-litre 163bhp diesel that hits 62mph in 8.7 seconds, and returns a highly respectable combined average of 52.3mpg. The most powerful petrol variant only manages 39.8mpg, but compensates by reaching to 62mph in only 7.6 seconds.
To complement the entertaining turn of speed, this Audi TT rival needs a refined and flowing chassis. Fortunately, Peugeot found some decent components lurking in the parts bin, so the RCZ is very good to drive. The steering is pin sharp and responsive, and this likeable coupé sticks to the tarmac like a possessed cartoon roadrunner. The RCZ also benefits from versatile suspension which although firm, is pliant enough to keep occupants comfortable as they benefit from the RCZ's distinctive aerodynamics.
Further plus points should, in due course, include an impressive safety rating from Euro NCAP, and sensibly modest running costs. The only major downside is that Peugeot's vehicles are not renowned for their long term durability. So, only time will tell if the RCZ becomes a life long love affair or a thrilling one night stand.
