The Volkswagen ID. Buzz is a stylish, electric, multi-purpose vehicle and spiritual successor to the manufacturer’s most iconic van: the Type 2. The Type 2 launched in 1950 and represented freedom, fun, and practicality for the masses. It was immensely popular in its time. It is still popular now. The new vehicle blends the spirit of its forefather with a modern persona for 2022.
Exterior
The Volkswagen ID. Buzz bears an uncanny resemblance to its predecessor. Inherited traits include the V-shape front, short overhangs by the wheels, and flat sides that maximise interior space. There are also large windows to flood the cabin with light and a sliding door on each side. LED lights and two-tone wheels complete the look. This striking vehicle is instantly recognisable.
Interior
The ID. Buzz has a modern and stylish interior. Key features include the large infotainment screen in the centre of the dashboard. The smaller screen behind the steering wheel is a digital instrument cluster. There are also plenty of cubby holes, five seats, and the cargo capacity is a generous 1,121 litres. Capacity rises to 2,205 litres once the rear seats are folded flat.
Equipment
The ID. Buzz has a range of clever equipment. The Car2X local warning system is among the highlights. It enables you to receive signals from other vehicles and transport infrastructure. The signals confirm there are hazards nearby. You might be told ahead of time there is an ambulance approaching from the rear, for instance. This early notice might help you move out the way sooner.
Motor and battery
The ID. Buzz has a 150KW electric motor that only spins its rear wheels. Power comes via a 77 kWh lithium ion battery that sits below the floor to minimise the vehicle’s centre of gravity. At a rapid charge station, the battery can be recharged from 5% to 80% in about half an hour. Volkswagen has yet to confirm how far the vehicle can travel per-charge, but rumours suggest about 250 miles.
Van version
The Volkswagen ID. Buzz has a sibling that suits if you want more cargo space and fewer seats. As the name suggests, the ID. Buzz Cargo is a van rather than a multi-purpose vehicle. The obvious exterior difference is that there are fewer side windows. The second row of passenger seats is missing, too. Instead, cargo capacity is 3.9 m3 which is enough for two euro pallets to sit transversely. In the front, you can have either two or three seats.
Availability and price
Volkswagen will start taking orders in May 2022 throughout the United Kingdom. Prices will be confirmed closer to the time.
