Big news if you're into EVs: the Nissan Leaf is back—but not as you know it. The next-gen Leaf is turning into a high-riding crossover SUV, ditching its old hatchback shape and stepping into something much more in line with what today’s drivers want. It was first teased as a concept back in March, and the production version is due to be fully revealed in late 2025.
This will be the third generation of the Leaf, replacing the version that ran from 2018 to 2024. The original Leaf launched in 2011 and was one of the first mainstream electric cars. It was a big deal at the time, but with rivals catching up and overtaking it in range, tech, and design, a serious refresh was overdue.
What’s New?
Visually, the new Leaf is a whole different beast. It borrows a lot from Nissan’s Chill-Out concept, with sharp ‘boomerang’ lights, a sleek front end with a full-width light bar, and an illuminated Nissan badge. It’s also rocking flush door handles and a sloping coupe-style roofline, which helps it look fresh and modern without sacrificing aerodynamics.
And yes, this new version sits much higher off the ground, giving it a proper SUV stance. Nissan says it’ll still be family-friendly and practical, so expect decent space inside despite the sportier shape. Competitors will include the Skoda Elroq, Kia EV3, Volvo EX30, and Smart #1.
We haven’t seen the interior yet, but we’re expecting a slick setup like the one in the bigger Nissan Ariya, with dual screens, minimalist controls, and Google-powered infotainment. Think clean, techy, and user-friendly.
Battery, Range & Charging
Nissan hasn’t given us all the specs just yet, but we do know the new Leaf will use the same EV platform as the Ariya and Renault Megane E-Tech. It’ll feature Nissan’s new three-in-one electric drive system and is likely to come with either a 63kWh or 87kWh battery.
That should mean:
- Around 280–300 miles of range for the entry model
- Up to 350+ miles for the long-range version
Charging speeds are expected to top out at 130kW—not the fastest out there, but still quick enough to get from 20% to 80% in around 30 minutes.
Still Built in Britain
The best part? The Leaf will continue to be built right here in the UK, at Nissan’s Sunderland plant. That same factory will also produce the next-gen all-electric Juke and Qashqai.
