Vehicle recalls surge more than tenfold since 1994

Recent analysis from The Car Expert shows that vehicle recalls have skyrocketed more than tenfold since 1994, according to data from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). This jump highlights how complex modern cars have become and stresses the importance of staying on top of maintenance.

In the first eight months of 2024 alone, nearly 1.1 million cars (almost 1.2 million vehicles in total) were recalled—an incredible rise from just 27 recalls in 1994. The Car Expert predicts that by the end of 2024, up to 1.8 million cars might be recalled, with around 260 recalls expected this year.

Recalls can range from minor fixes to serious safety issues that require "Stop Drive" orders. While the DVSA focuses on safety-related recalls, non-safety issues can lead to voluntary recalls. For example, BMW recently recalled 1.5 million cars worldwide due to a braking problem, costing the company an estimated $1 billion.

In the UK, Mercedes-Benz has recalled over 337,000 cars this year, particularly targeting vehicles up to six years old. Some of the oldest models affected include Audi A4s from 2004.

Stuart Masson, editorial director at The Car Expert, emphasised "Recalls in the UK are serious, as they usually indicate safety concerns. With the growing number of recalls, it's vital that drivers stay informed."

So far in 2024, 41 car manufacturers have issued recalls, spanning from budget brands like Dacia and Fiat to luxury names like Rolls-Royce and Koenigsegg.
