Genesis has revealed two striking new concepts, the X Gran Coupé and X Gran Convertible, showcasing its vision for the future of luxury. Both models are based on the G90 flagship saloon and highlight the brand’s evolving design philosophy.
Unveiled at the Seoul Motor Show, the concepts mark a decade since Genesis became an independent brand from Hyundai. They serve as a statement of intent, demonstrating how the marque could expand into niche luxury segments.
Despite their unique identities, the X Gran Coupé and X Gran Convertible retain clear ties to the G90, featuring signature design elements like the twin-light bar at the front and rear. Genesis design chief Luc Donckerwolke emphasised that these are more than just show cars:
“In a time when people think only about one single typology of vehicle, I think it is important to ensure we offer different variants in the lineup. These cars are built on the G90 platform and could be integrated into the range if the business case supports it. We’ve seen enough interest to be optimistic.”
Both concepts incorporate near-production-ready features, including frameless windows, pillarless doors, and quilted interior materials. Genesis describes them as expressions of “exclusive sportiness and luxurious elegance,” expanding on the design themes of previous X Concepts from 2021 and 2022.
Luxury is taken a step further with intricate details such as crystal embellishments on the steering wheel, centre console, and air vents, which create dazzling reflections in sunlight. The convertible, with its cloth roof, is designed to evoke the essence of fine wine, featuring a deep purple exterior inspired by pressed grapes and an interior finished in shades reminiscent of Cabernet Sauvignon from Italy’s Livorno region.
Additional high-end touches include an aluminum-spoked steering wheel, integrated rear-seat displays, and microperforated olive wood trim. Underneath, both concepts share the short-wheelbase version of the G90’s platform and utilize the same 409bhp mild-hybrid powertrain—a 3.5-liter V6 petrol engine with electric assistance.
Currently, the G90 is only available in Germany and Switzerland, and Genesis has no announced plans to electrify it. The brand has also softened its stance on an all-electric future, opting instead to expand its global lineup with hybrid models.
