A determined learner driver has finally passed their theory test on the 75th attempt, spending a total of £1,725 on fees, according to new data from AA Driving School.
With each theory test costing £23, it took years of perseverance before the driver finally achieved a pass. But while 75 attempts might sound extreme, it’s not the record. One individual holds that title with 127 failed attempts - only passing on their 128th try after spending nearly £3,000.
The theory test is designed to check a driver’s understanding of road rules, safety, and hazard awareness. It must be passed before booking a practical driving test, and there’s no limit to how many times someone can take it.
Emma Bush, Managing Director at AA Driving School, said it’s “easy to underestimate the level of knowledge required” and that revision is key. She added that “life can get in the way,” with nerves and time pressure often playing a part in repeated failures.
When it comes to the practical driving test, some learners face even steeper costs. The most attempts recorded last year before passing was 21, costing up to £1,575, while two learners have failed the practical 37 times each - spending as much as £2,220.
AA Driving School advises learners to book their practical test only when their instructor believes they’re ready and to take mock tests to help calm nerves.
Latest figures from the DVSA show pass rates of 44.9% for theory tests and 48.7% for practical tests during the 2024/25 financial year.
