How to get a cheaper car insurance policy as a new driver

Being a new driver in the UK can be an exciting experience, but it often comes with the challenge of securing affordable car insurance.

Insurance premiums for new drivers tend to be higher due to the perceived higher risk associated with inexperienced drivers. However, there are several strategies you can employ to help reduce the cost of your insurance policy. In this guide, we will explore various tips and techniques to assist new drivers in obtaining cheaper insurance coverage.

Build a safe driving record

Ok – so this won’t help you straight away but if you avoid speeding tickets, traffic violations, and accidents, as quickly as year two you will start to see a reduction.

Consider enrolling in a Pass Plus scheme or advanced driving course

This will demonstrate your commitment to improving your driving skills and help to reduce your policy.

Choose the right car

Opt for a car in a lower insurance group, avoiding high-performance or modified vehicles.

Take security seriously

Park your car in a secure location, ideally in a locked garage or on a driveway. Consider getting a steering wheel lock – they’re great at preventing theft and often a lot cheaper than tracking systems.

Get comparisons and play around with your job title

Get quotes from multiple insurance providers to compare prices and coverage options. And see if inputing different – but still relevant – job titles impacts your premium. Find the list of the titles that typically deliver the cheapest premiums here.

Consider telematics

Telematics – or a black box – tracks your movements and driving habits. The black box assesses factors such as speed, braking, and acceleration, rewarding responsible driving habits and will likely decrease your premium if you have one fitted – and reduce it further if you prove to be a safe driver.

Increase voluntary excess

Voluntary excess is the amount you are willing to contribute towards a claim before the insurance coverage kicks in. If you’re comfortable with paying a higher amount this will decrease your overall premium.

Add experienced drivers as named drivers

Adding an experienced driver, such as a parent or guardian, to your insurance policy as a named driver can lower your premium. However, they should not be the primary driver if you are the main user of the vehicle.

Pay annually Instead of monthly

Opting to pay your insurance premium annually rather than monthly can result in cost savings. Monthly payments often include additional administrative fees or interest charges.
