The price of insurance for those who have just passed their test has always been high, but GoCompare has released data to reveal the cheapest cars for new drivers to insure.

1. Skoda CitiGo: £908
Skoda’s smallest model is surprisingly spacious and it also offers the cheapest young driver insurance costs at an average of £908.
2. VW Up!: £930
The Up! is a very similar car to the Skoda. With both VW and Skoda owned by the VW Group, the Up! is virtually the same as the CitiGo under the bonnet and is priced a little higher when you buy from the showroom. As a result, the average insurance cost for new drivers is £930.
3. Seat Mii: £960
The VW Group also owns Seat and it’s no surprise that the Mii, which is again almost identical to the Up! and the CitiGo is next on the list. The Spanish brand's generally younger customers makes the average insurance cost slightly higher at £960.
4. Suzuki Celerio: £961
The Celerio was the second cheapest new car in the UK behind the infamous Dacia Sandero. The Celerio is basic but reliable and comes with a low average insurance premium of £961.
5. Hyundai i10: £971
The i10 is Hyundai’s answer to affordable motoring and has been a hit with UK motorists. It comes well equipped with tech compared to its competitors and an average insurance premium at £971.
6. Fiat Panda: £983
The Panda has been around since the early 1980s and was a hit with older drivers when it first landed here as a result of its no-frills and cheap motoring. The latest generation is more appealing for younger drivers and costs an average of £983 to insure – although it doesn't have the best Euro NCAP test rating.
7. Citroen C1: £984
The C1 is another extremely popular small car and has plenty of personality despite its tiny frame. It was made in partnership with Toyota which created the Aygo – both of which are cheap and cheerful. The C1 costs new drivers an average of £984 a year to insure.
8. Peugeot 108: £996
The 108 is mechanically the same as the Citroen C1 and shares plenty of similarities visually too. Average new driver cover is £996, says GoCompare.
9. Peugeot 107: £1,004
The 107 is the predecessor to the 108 and surprisingly costs a touch more than its younger sibling on average to insure. Despite having a typically cheaper purchase price, average new driver premiums are £1,004.
10. Ford Ka: £1,016
And rounding off the top 10 is the Ford KA. Like the Fiat Panda, the Ka has been around for some time and has cemented its place in the small car hall of fame after years of consistent sales. According to GoCompare, it costs an average of £1,016 to insure.
