Filling out car insurance forms is no one's idea of fun, but the choices you make can seriously affect how much you end up paying. Car insurance comparison site, Quotezone, analysed 100,000 policies to find out which job titles can raise or lower your insurance premium.
Warehouse workers have it the worst, with premiums that are almost 40% higher than the average driver. While the average insurance policy costs £984.56, warehouse workers are forking out around £1,371.67.
Healthcare assistants, who work in care homes, hospitals, or clinics, also get hit hard, with premiums 36% higher than average. Chefs aren’t far behind, paying 30% above the norm. This isn’t because they drive luxury cars like celebrity chefs, but likely due to the long hours, high pressure, and demanding nature of their jobs. Insurers base premiums on risk factors, including work conditions and lifestyle, so people working late-night shifts often get higher rates.
Quotezone advises that if your job title pushes up your premium, it’s worth tweaking it—within reason. For instance, healthcare assistants might try using "Care Worker" or "Care Assistant" instead, as long as it accurately describes the job.
Not everyone gets hit with higher premiums. Teachers, civil servants, and HGV drivers tend to get cheaper insurance, with quotes up to 41% below the national average. Retirees get the best deals, with premiums up to 50% lower.
Interestingly, a quarter of drivers don’t realise their job title affects their premium. Of those who do, almost 40% have tried adjusting their title, and nearly two-thirds saved money. However, be cautious—giving an inaccurate job title can void your insurance altogether.
