Roads Minister, Guy Opperman, will today announce changes to the way sat-nav systems can access information making it easier for drivers to avoid road works and traffic jams.
At the minute, technology like Apple Maps and Google Maps anonymously collects data from its users to highlight expected delays, but regulation will shortly change meaning they will now be able to get data from local authorities.
The regulation change will come into force in 2025 and means councils and traffic authorities will need to submit Traffic Regulation Orders – short-term traffic measures such as temporary speed limits or road closures – digitally, so that information is freely available online.Edmund King, president of the AA, said this would be good news for motorists; “Any use of technology that gives drivers more up-to-date information about congestion, road closures and roadworks has got to be a good thing.
“Some councils really aren't up to date with technology and it hasn't been a priority to keep the roads flowing. Drivers pay to use the roads and they deserve a more efficient system.”
