Move comes after supermarkets were found to have increased margins at the expense of the British motorist

Asda is the first to publish fuel prices online with others expected to follow

Asda is the first retailer to publish daily local fuel prices following pressure from the public, the Government and price watchdogs.

We’ve been reporting on this issue for some time and as recently as last month Energy Secretary, Grant Shapps, issued an ultimatum to supermarkets that if they don’t voluntarily get prices online in August he will look to enforce change.

To find the price of fuel at Asda at the supermarket closet to you, head to the store locator section of its website.

The latest fuel prices will be displayed each morning at 10.30am with the previous day's closing price.

And users can expect to see real-time prices within the coming months.

A spokesperson said: 'Asda is proud to be the price leader in the fuel, and by sharing our prices online customers will be able to find the best value at the pumps before they get in the car.'

Simon Williams, RAC fuel spokesman, said: 'While it's good to see the supermarkets start to publish their pump prices, we don't believe displaying them on websites will suddenly make retailers start charging fairer prices.'
