Asda has reduced petrol and diesel prices by 4p per litre overnight, marking the biggest price cut by any retailer in 2025 and Asda’s most significant reduction since 2022.
Drivers filling up at Asda will now pay an average of 131.96p per litre for unleaded and 137.63p for diesel, significantly lower than the UK average of 138.98p for petrol and 145.79p for diesel, according to RAC Fuel Watch.
The price drop applies across all Asda forecourts, and further reductions could follow as oil prices hit a six-month low. The RAC predicts petrol prices could fall by another 6p per litre, with diesel set to drop by 4p per litre in the coming weeks.
Simon Williams, RAC head of policy, welcomed the move, stating:
"Asda is once again leading the way, responding to lower wholesale costs with a meaningful price cut. This should push other retailers to follow suit, bringing relief to drivers nationwide. If oil prices remain around $70 per barrel, we could see petrol hit its lowest price in four years."
Industry experts believe Asda’s move could reignite competition among supermarkets, prompting further fuel price cuts.
Allan Leighton, Asda’s executive chairman, emphasized the retailer’s commitment to value:
"At Asda, we are dedicated to giving hard-working families the best possible value. This price cut delivers real savings at the pump."
Meanwhile, AA spokesman Luke Bosdet suggested fuel prices should have dropped sooner:
"Retailers knew there was room to lower prices but waited to see who would act first. We hope the upcoming government-backed ‘fuel finder’ scheme will help consumers identify the most competitive forecourts."
For now, drivers will be watching to see if rival supermarkets respond to Asda’s bold price drop.
