Birmingham Airport is introducing a new parking system on March 18, aiming to improve traffic flow, but drivers should be aware of key changes.

Big changes coming to Birmingham Airport parking – Here’s what you need to know

If you're flying from Birmingham Airport (BHX) soon, a brand-new parking system is launching on March 18. The airport says it will make journeys smoother, but there are a few things to keep in mind.

The airport is removing barriers and switching to Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) to speed up traffic flow and reduce congestion. This means there will be no more waiting at the barriers, but drivers must remember to pay within 24 hours of leaving the car park.

Payments can be made through AutoPay, which automatically deducts the fee after exiting the car park. There is also the option to pay later online or use the on-site machines before leaving.

Parking at Birmingham Airport isn't cheap. The current rates for the Premium Drop Off area are £6 for 0 to 15 minutes, £11 for 15 to 20 minutes, and £17 for 20 to 25 minutes.

The airport hopes the new system will reduce congestion, lower emissions, and improve air quality as part of its goal to become Net Zero Carbon by 2033.

Here’s how Birmingham Airport compares to other UK airports for short-term parking:

Airport Cost (£) Duration
London Stansted 7 0-15 mins
Manchester 6.20 10 mins
Birmingham 6 0-15 mins
London Heathrow 6 0-15 mins
Edinburgh 6 10 mins
London Gatwick 6 0-15 mins
Liverpool John Lennon 6 10 mins
London Luton 5 5 mins
Glasgow 5.50 0-15 mins
Newcastle 5 10 mins
Cardiff 3 10 mins
London City Free 0-15 mins

More details on AutoPay registration and the new system will be available soon. Will this make parking easier or just add another cost for drivers? Let us know your thoughts.
