BMW to End Production of Iconic Z4 After 22 Years, Launches Collector’s ‘Final Edition’

BMW has announced it will stop producing the Z4, one of its most iconic models, after more than two decades. To mark the end of its run, the brand is releasing a special “Final Edition.”

The Z4, first launched in 2002, will cease production in March 2026. BMW praised the model for its engineering, saying it “set new standards with torsional stiffness previously unmatched in the convertible and roadster segment.”

The Z4 M Roadster, equipped with a 252 kW/340 hp six-cylinder engine from the BMW M3, could accelerate from 0–100 km/h in just five seconds. The second-generation Z4, introduced in 2008, featured a retractable hardtop that opened or closed in 20 seconds.

BMW described the Z4 as “a premium roadster with an electrically operated fabric soft top, sporty handling, and a purist, driver-focused interior,” complemented by modern infotainment, connectivity, and driver assistance features.

To celebrate the Z4’s legacy, BMW is launching the Z4 Final Edition, which it suggests may become a collector’s item. Orders open in late January, but availability will be limited.

The Final Edition comes with exclusive Frozen Matt Black paint, M High-gloss Shadowline trim, and specially engraved door sills. Buyers can also choose other colours from the Z4 range at no extra cost.

Available models for the Final Edition include:

  • Z4 sDrive20i – 145 kW / 197 hp
  • Z4 sDrive30i – 190 kW / 258 hp
  • Z4 M40i – 250 kW / 340 hp six-cylinder engine

On the resale market, nearly 600 Z4s are currently listed on Autotrader, with prices ranging from £800 to £59,995.
