Chinese automaker BYD has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the globe's largest seller of electric vehicles.

BYD surpasses Tesla to become the world's leading electric vehicle manufacturer

BYD announced that its electric vehicle sales surged by nearly 28 per cent last year, reaching over 2.25 million units. This impressive performance contrasts sharply with Tesla's reported sales of approximately 1.65 million vehicles for the same period, marking the first time the Chinese manufacturer has outsold its American competitor on an annual basis.

Tesla has encountered considerable headwinds throughout the past year. The company struggled with a lukewarm reception to its new models and faced criticism over leadership distractions.

Additionally, intensifying competition from Chinese rivals has eroded its market dominance. In response, Tesla attempted to revitalise sales by introducing more affordable versions of its bestselling models in October, addressing longstanding complaints about the lack of competitively priced options.

The company's early 2025 performance suffered further as sales declined following backlash related to Musk's involvement with the Trump administration.

Musk's Divided Attention

Musk's focus on Tesla has been questioned by investors, given his extensive portfolio of other ventures. Beyond Tesla, he oversees the social media platform X, the aerospace company SpaceX, the Boring Company, and his recent appointment to lead the Department of Government Efficiency.

Despite shareholder approval of a potentially unprecedented $1 trillion compensation package contingent on boosting Tesla's performance, concerns persist about whether Musk can adequately prioritise the electric vehicle manufacturer. However, he has recently committed to reducing his government involvement.

BYD's Strategic Expansion

Despite slowing growth in 2025, its weakest expansion rate in five years, BYD continues to strengthen its global position. The Shenzhen-based company faces intensifying domestic competition from emerging Chinese EV makers like XPeng and Nio. However, BYD maintains its competitive edge through aggressive pricing strategies that undercut rivals.

The company's international expansion has proven particularly successful, with a growing presence in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Europe, even amid substantial tariffs imposed on Chinese electric vehicles. Notably, BYD identified the United Kingdom as its largest market outside China in October, with British sales skyrocketing by 880 per cent year-over-year, driven primarily by demand for its plug-in hybrid Seal U SUV.
