Vauxhall’s STX Concept previews a possible future for the Astra Sports Tourer, with all-electric power, bold styling and a challenge to the SUV obsession.

Could the next Vauxhall Astra look like this?

Vauxhall has unveiled its Sports Tourer eXperimental (STX) Concept, an electric estate that could influence the next-generation Astra Sports Tourer.

Revealed ahead of the Paris Motor Show, the STX takes aim at the dominance of electric SUVs. Its lower estate-car shape offers a different vision for family motoring, with a long roofline and the promise of plenty of luggage space.

There’s no production model or confirmed UK price yet, so you shouldn’t start planning your next car purchase around it. However, Vauxhall says the concept previews the future development of its estate body style and introduces design features that will appear on upcoming models.

Vauxhall STX Concept design and exterior

The STX introduces the latest evolution of Vauxhall’s Vizor front end, with a taller, more prominent fascia and angular lighting that sweeps inwards from the outer edges. At its centre sits an illuminated version of the brand’s refreshed Griffin emblem, making this the first car to feature the new design.

The rest of the bodywork follows a clean, aerodynamic theme. Short overhangs, sculpted panels, distinctive three-section alloy wheels and a steeply sloping roofline give the estate a sporty profile, while the rear combines glass light strips with vertical lighting elements that echo the front.

Vauxhall is clearly keen to make the electric estate feel desirable, and the STX has enough visual drama to stand apart from the growing crowd of high-riding electric family cars.

One feature likely to divide opinion is the use of cameras in place of conventional door mirrors. They help support the aerodynamic design, although some drivers will understandably prefer familiar mirrors that offer a straightforward view without relying on screens.

Vauxhall STX Concept electric range and performance

Technical details remain limited, but Vauxhall has confirmed that the STX uses an all-wheel-drive electric architecture and has a claimed top speed of 124mph.

That gives us an indication of its intended performance, although there’s no confirmed power output, battery capacity, driving range or charging speed at this stage. Vauxhall has also yet to publish figures for acceleration or boot capacity.

The concept's aerodynamic features are among its more unusual details. An active system adapts to driving conditions, with blue-coloured diffusers extending from beneath the rear at certain speeds and vertical elements behind the wheels moving outwards to support the car’s streamlined profile.

These features demonstrate the thinking behind the design, but their presence on a concept doesn't guarantee they'll reach a production car in the same form. Efficiency figures will matter far more to family buyers than a clever-looking diffuser.

Vauxhall STX Concept interior and technology

Vauxhall has yet to reveal the STX's interior, although it says the cabin will develop its 'Painting with Light' design approach. This has featured in previous concepts, including the 2023 Vauxhall Experimental and the 2025 Vauxhall Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo.

The manufacturer has also indicated that the interior will feature specially developed lightweight seats and immersive lighting elements.

For a future Astra estate, the important questions will be how much room passengers get, how practical the boot proves to be and whether the cabin's technology makes everyday driving easier. Until Vauxhall reveals more, those details remain unknown.

Will the Vauxhall STX become the next Astra estate?

The STX is a strong indication that Vauxhall sees a future for the estate car, even as manufacturers continue to prioritise SUVs. Its combination of electric power, a low-slung body and a practical-looking silhouette could appeal to families who want the advantages of a spacious car without the bulk of a taller vehicle.

However, the concept is not confirmation of a production-ready next-generation Astra Sports Tourer. Vauxhall has not announced a launch date, UK pricing or final specifications, so any prediction about when it might reach showrooms would be premature.

Our verdict

The Vauxhall STX Concept is an encouraging sign for anyone who thinks the family estate deserves more attention. Its styling looks distinctive, and the prospect of an all-wheel-drive electric estate is appealing. Yet the real test will come when Vauxhall reveals the range, charging performance, interior space and price.

For now, the STX is a promising glimpse of what could come next. We'd welcome a production Astra estate that looks this adventurous, provided Vauxhall can match the styling with the everyday practicality that makes estates worth buying.
