Here’s why you should appeal council-issued PCNs.

Data shows over 65% of Ulez appeals are successful while we explain why it’s worth appealing fines from across the UK

A freedom of information request submitted by MyLondon has shown 52,924 out of 78,357 Ulez fines have been overturned since 29th August last year.

68% of drivers who have been handed fines by TfL successfully appealed fines that were issued because their vehicle supposedly didn’t comply with Ulez restrictions.

Earlier this month we revealed almost 130,000 fines had been incorrectly issued since 2019 while Sadiq Khan has also been accused by five EU nations of illegally taking personal information from visitors to the UK by handing out 320,000 PCNs to EU citizens.

One French visitor was issued with a whopping £25,000 fine despite driving a compliant vehicle.

The news that high volumes of motorists were successful in their appeals supports a national trend.

Last month, a Regit investigation showed scores of councils not bothering to contest appeals – which in some cases is down to a shortage of staff.

In 2021/22 across England and Wales there were over 11 million penalties issued but just 26,338 (0.23%) appealed.

13,267 (51%) of those appeals weren’t contested and an additional 4,871 (19%) were successful in their appeal. 7,981 (30%) either reached an agreement or had their appeal refused.

The picture was particularly stark in Bath where the council didn’t challenge 72% of appeals.
