How expensive is your local forecourt operator?

Data shows which supermarkets and fuel retailers are the cheapest – and which ones rip you off

An RAC study has found that Shell typically offers the most expensive price per litre of petrol, with Morrisons being the cheapest.

Unsurprisingly, the data shows supermarkets are your best bet when needing to fill your car with the Morrisons, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Tesco all holding the top four spots.

Forecourt Average price per litre of petrol
1. Morrisons 136.9p
2. Asda 137.2p
3. Sainsbury's 137.3p
4. Tesco 137.4p
5. Jet 137.9p
6. Applegreen 138.0p
7. Texaco 138.7p
8. Esso 139.5p
9. BP 140.8p
10. Shell 142.6p

Shell was typically charging an average of 142.6p per litre of petrol on Thursday 11th January and and 151.2p per litre for diesel.

Morrisons, on the other hand, came out on top after charging an average of 136.9p per litre of petrol and 145.5p per litre of diesel.

That means filling a 55-litre car – about the size of an average tank – would be £3.14 cheaper at Morrisons.

Historically, Asda had set the benchmark for low fuel prices but that changed when Mohsin and Zuber Issa took control of the supermarket in 2021.

The take-over was largely funded by borrowing, leaving it with £4.2bn of debt. Since then, the chain has been criticised by competition watchdogs for pushing up its profit margins on fuel.

On a separate note, fuel prices are once again expected to rise over the coming weeks as conflict in the Middle-East continues to worsen.
