New rules that come into force today (28th June) mean judges can hand down life sentences

Drunk drivers who kill see penalty raised to life

Dangerous drivers who kill and careless drivers who kill while under the influence of drink or drugs will both be applicable for life sentences under new rulings. The new sentence far exceeds the previous maximum penalty of 14 years.

As part of the reforms, a new offence of causing serious injury by careless driving has been created. This applies to drivers who inflict long-term or permanent injuries and mean they too face tough sentences.

Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary Dominic Raab said: “Too many lives have been lost to reckless behaviour behind the wheel, devastating families.

“We have changed the law so that those responsible will now face the possibility of life behind bars.”
