Luton Airport Fire: Demolition of car park begins

Dismantling of the fire-damaged car park at Luton Airport is underway.

The airport initiated the process after declaring in November that Terminal Car Park 2 would be 'fully demolished' due to structural issues identified in reports.

The fire originated on the third level of the car park on October 10, believed to have started in a diesel car before spreading rapidly.

According to an airport spokesman, the dismantling work is anticipated to span 16 weeks. As part of the process, cars will be removed from various levels.

Post-removal, salvage companies appointed by insurers will take possession of the cars, as mentioned by the airport spokesman in a statement to the BBC. Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service had previously indicated that it was unlikely any of the vehicles could be used again.

The airport has shared registration details of 1,405 vehicles with the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB). In November, Neil Thompson, the operations director at the airport, expressed reassurance, stating, "It is reassuring to note that the vast majority of insurance claims have been settled."
