A quick-witted driver spotted a fellow motorist slumped over his steering wheel and took immediate action.

Man brings another car safely to a stop after driver fell ill on busy M62

John Barlow, a 59 year old motorist from Greater Manchester, has been praised by police for his quick thinking after he took decisive action to prevent what could’ve been a ‘serious collision’.

Mr Barlow was driving on the M62 close to Leeds when he spotted an Audi driving increasingly slowly in the outside lane.

After pulling alongside to see what was happening, he saw the driver was blue in the face and had blood trickling down his face.

He then drove ahead of the Audi and forced a safe collision to bring the ill-driver’s car to a halt on the motorway and smashed his window to give emergency care.

"He looked dead at the wheel. I could see his lips were blue and he had blood trickling down his face," Mr Barlow said.

Mr Barlow opened the seriously ill driver's airway by tilting his jaw backwards which enabled the driver to take a gasp of air.

Other drivers, including a physio and off-duty police officer, stopped at the scene to help whilst a doctor travelling on the opposite carriageway travelled to the next junction and turned around in order to bring a defibrillator.

Mr Barlow said: "Everyone was amazing, it was a real team effort. They got the man on the floor, then the doctor jumped in as well."
