Meet Scotland’s fleet of well-named gritters

Scotland’s gritters have a fun history of carrying puns as names. This was firstly done in conjunction with local schools but in 2020 the fleet has been named by the Scottish public.

When the appeal was frist issued to the public as a result of school closures during the Covid-19 pandemic, over 1,200 names were put forward.

Scottish icon Sir Sean Connery has a hand in five gritter names with some of his James Bond films being referenced; Dr Snow, Coldfinger, You Only Grit Ice, On Her Majesty’s Slippery Surface and TroonRaker.

Find the full list of gritter names below or you can contribute to the next naming appeal here.
