The hypercar – which is based on an F1 car – was almost eight seconds quicker than the previous record holder.

The Mercedes-AMG One lapped the 12.92-mile (20.8km) configuration of the world-famous Nürburgring Nordschleife, Germany, in 6m 35.183s to obliterate the record for production vehicles – set by a Porsche 911 GT2 RS.

In damp conditions and with the circuit drying slowly, Mercedes had less than an hour remaining in the block of time with the track to itself and their driver, Maro Engel, was only able to do four fast laps.

"I didn’t expect that we would be able to set such a lap time with these track conditions. In some crucial areas of the track, it hadn’t dried completely yet and was therefore tricky. That was a special challenge," Engel said.

The AMG One produces 1,049 BPH coming from an F1-style 1.6-litre V6 and four electric motors. The 62mph in just 2.9 seconds and will hit a top speed of 219 mph (352 kph).

Mercedes is making just 275 examples of the One.
