MG Metro 6R4 Rally Car: Rare Opportunity to Own a Legend

A rare MG Metro 6R4 ‘Clubman’ – one of only 200 ever produced – is heading to auction, with an estimated price of £240,000.

This iconic rally car, built in 1987, boasts a 3-litre V6 engine, four-wheel drive, and twin-cam cylinder heads. Finished in its original white paintwork, it features 15-inch Dymag wheels, a red-and-black MG-branded steering wheel, and an untouched classic dashboard.

The MG Metro 6R4 was the brainchild of John Davenport, Chief of Austin Rover Motorsport, working alongside leading engineers. It was designed to compete in the thrilling but short-lived Group B category of the World Rally Championship. The Group B era, famous for its high-performance rally cars, ended in 1984 due to safety concerns after a series of fatal spectator accidents.

This particular 'Clubman' model is a road-legal version with 250bhp and just 3,403 miles on the clock. It will go under the hammer on Saturday, 22nd February 2025, at Stoneleigh Park in Coventry, hosted by Iconic Auctioneers.

According to the auction listing, this MG Metro has a flawless history, never having been used in competition. The car’s maintenance record is meticulous, ensuring it remains in peak condition. It retains all original road car features, including the seats, dashboard, and its unique all-synchromesh gearbox.

The car has had just two owners since 1987. After 19 years of careful ownership, it passed to a well-known MG Metro enthusiast in 2006 before being sold again in 2009. Over the decades, it has been cherished and lightly driven, with the odometer now reading 3,423 miles.

This road-registered MG Metro 6R4 is described as “as correct as you will ever find.” It comes with complete paperwork, an up-to-date MOT, and records of all work carried out by specialist mechanics. The car has been preserved as a near-perfect example of the Group B homologation cars, making it an extraordinary piece of motorsport history.

Collectors and enthusiasts alike will appreciate this rare opportunity to own such an iconic rally car. As the auction listing notes, it’s a “true survivor” of a golden era in motorsport, and a must-have for anyone passionate about rallying heritage.
