The BMW iX is a fast, modern, electric sports activity vehicle that launches toward the end of 2021 in the United Kingdom. BMW says it is the ‘first representative of a trailblazing generation poised to redefine the driving experience’. Whereas details are sketchy this far from launch, BMW has confirmed enough to give a first impression. Let us see what the car has to offer.
Exterior
The iX has a striking look. For example, its vast, vertical, kidney grille is domineering. On a petrol/diesel car, a grille lets air pass through the radiator to cool the engine. Not the iX. Why? Because electric propulsion needs less cooling so the grille is blanked off. It instead serves as an ‘intelligence panel’ that contains ‘camera technology, radar functions, and other sensors’, BMW reveals.
Other prominent styling traits include the headlamps. They are the slimmest fitted to any of the manufacturer’s cars – ever. This sports activity vehicle also has flush door openers. There are no handles, in other words. Simply press a button to open the door. The vehicle also has frameless side windows and flashes of colourful trim on its front, sides, and rear that contrast the bodywork.
Performance, range, and charging
BMW eDrive Technology is the heart of the vehicle and is now in its fifth generation. It encompasses the twin electric motors, battery, charging technology, and associated electronics. Expect ‘exceptional efficiency’, the manufacturer says. Although unconfirmed, the predicted figures suggest the car is fast, powerful, and capable of travelling a long way between charges. Expect:
- power: 500 hp
- 0 to 62 mph: less than 5 seconds
- range per-charge: more than 300 miles.
The BMW iX sports activity vehicle can be charged at up to 200 kW. That is extremely fast. At this pace, battery charge rises from 10% to 80% in less than 40 minutes. The vehicle’s range can therefore be increased by more than 75 miles in 10 minutes. Alternatively, a slower wallbox charger – that can be installed at home – charges the battery from 0% to 100% in less than 11 hours.
Interior
The BMW iX has a minimalistic interior to maximise the sense of space. The ‘displays and controls are stripped down to the essentials’, the manufacturer explains. The tall, very wide, curved screen facing the driver is the most prominent feature. It complements the hexagonal wheel, rocker switch gear selector, and the intricate air vents. It looks futuristic and stylish. Bring on 2021!
