Over 140,000 UK drivers banned – Is your area a hotspot for bad driving?

New data has revealed that more than 140,000 drivers are currently banned from UK roads – a 15% increase from last year. That’s the equivalent of one in every 374 drivers losing their licence, according to figures from the DVLA and temporary insurance provider Dayinsure.

Why Are So Many Drivers Getting Banned?

There are two main ways a driver can lose their licence:

  1. Building up 12 or more penalty points – This usually happens due to repeat offences like speeding, careless driving, or using a phone behind the wheel.
  2. Serious driving offences – Crimes such as dangerous driving, drink driving, or causing death by driving can lead to an instant ban, heavy fines, or even jail time.

Where Are the Worst Offenders?

In 2025, the highest concentration of banned drivers is in the north of England. Here are the top hotspots:

  • Liverpool – 3,154 banned drivers (1 in 210)
  • Bradford – 2,159 banned drivers (also 1 in 210)
  • Teesside – 2,207 banned drivers (1 in 213)
  • Llandudno, North Wales – 1,737 banned drivers (1 in 244)

Unlike last year, where Welsh cities Newport and Cardiff made the list, Llandudno is now the only region in Wales ranked in the top spots.

Nicholas Shaw, Managing Director at Dayinsure, warns that, “While the vast majority of UK motorists comply with the law, it is still alarming to see that so many motorists have been disqualified from driving due to dangerous and careless driving.

“The data highlights how vital it is for motorists to take extra care and attention when driving, as you never know what other road users might be doing – you sadly cannot just assume that others will drive as carefully as you would.

“Our final piece of advice would be to ensure that you are fully insured in case worse comes to worse and you are involved in an accident.”
