Polestar 4, the innovative Swedish-made car, is breaking new ground as the first vehicle to hit British roads without a rear window. Instead, it features a high-definition screen displaying a real-time feed from a roof-mounted rear camera, replacing the traditional rear-view mirror.

Owned by Volvo, Polestar has removed the rear window entirely, providing additional headroom and installing a cutting-edge camera system. This design change aims to offer drivers a distinctive experience and an enhanced view of the road behind them.

Motoring expert Quentin Willson explained that the trend of shrinking rear windows due to evolving car shapes prompted this unique approach. He highlighted the advantages of the Polestar 4's rear camera, emphasising its high definition, wider arc, and superior visibility compared to conventional rear windows.

"The car has been out in China since December and there have been no discouraging words.

"The argument is, I think, it actually gives you a better view because the camera is high definition, it's a wider arc, and you see more than you would than through that grimy rear window."

This design innovation, already present in some vans and trucks replacing rear-view windows with cameras, addresses challenges like obscured windows in crowded vehicles.

The Polestar 4, priced at £59,990, is set to debut in the UK from August.
