Polestar announces bold EV Line-Up with four new models by 2028

Polestar has announced a significant expansion of its electric vehicle line-up with the confirmation of four new models scheduled for release by the end of 2028. The Swedish performance marque, which is owned by the Geely Group, detailed the product offensive as part of a strategic recovery plan designed to stabilise its financial position and double global sales volumes. The manufacturer aims to increase its annual deliveries to approximately 100,000 units, following a challenging period marked by share price volatility and reported losses.

The strategic roadmap was detailed by Michael Lohscheller, the former head of Opel-Vauxhall who took over as Polestar Chief Executive in late 2024. Under the new plans, the company intends to increase its coverage of the electric vehicle market from its current 25 per cent to as much as 65 per cent. The executive confirmed that the expanded portfolio would allow the brand to compete in more high-volume segments while maintaining its status as a premium manufacturer.

Polestar 5 Grand Tourer to Lead Arrivals

The first vehicle to arrive under the refreshed strategy remains the Polestar 5, which is scheduled for a market release this summer. The electric grand tourer was originally developed by the company’s former research and development team based in the United Kingdom. Positioned as a flagship or 'halo' model, the Polestar 5 is intended to showcase the brand's technical capabilities and design direction. While not a limited-edition vehicle, the manufacturer does not expect it to be its primary volume driver.

Following the Polestar 5, the brand will introduce a new variant of its best-selling model, the Polestar 4. This new iteration will take the form of an estate-style body, designed to offer greater practicality for families and owners with pets. In a notable design shift, the upcoming estate will feature a traditional rear window. This contrasts with the current Polestar 4 Coupé, which famously omitted the rear glass in favour of a digital camera system. The estate variant will be built in Busan, South Korea, to avoid specific international trade tariffs.

Successor to Polestar 2 Confirmed for 2027

One of the most significant updates in the announcement is the accelerated timeline for the second-generation Polestar 2. The company confirmed that a complete replacement for the existing electric saloon will arrive in 2027, sooner than industry analysts had previously predicted. The new model has been developed in approximately 30 months, a timeframe the manufacturer described as record speed for the brand.

The next-generation Polestar 2 will be built on an entirely new platform. According to company specifications, the vehicle will be slightly longer than the current model to provide increased legroom for rear-seat passengers. The brand noted that while the current car has sold 190,000 units to date, the successor is being designed to appeal to a younger demographic while retaining the customer base that established the brand in the UK and European markets.

Polestar 7 to Target Compact SUV Segment

In 2028, the company will launch the Polestar 7, a compact SUV that is expected to become the firm’s most significant volume health indicator. The vehicle is closely related to the upcoming Volvo EX60 and will compete in the most rapidly expanding segment of the European electric vehicle market. The company said the Polestar 7 would offer a performance-oriented alternative to traditional SUVs at a competitive price point, using a design language that emphasises a sleek profile over a traditional boxy SUV shape.

Regarding the longer-term future, Polestar clarified that the Polestar 6, a high-end convertible, remains in development but will not appear until after the 2028 product cycle is complete. The manufacturer emphasised that while growth is essential to achieve economies of scale, it would prioritise brand value over aggressive discounting or volume-chasing. The company stated that the confirmed arrivals would ensure Polestar has a presence in every critical electric vehicle category within the next three years.

Operational and Financial Targets

The Department for Business and Trade and UK automotive analysts have closely monitored Polestar’s progress as a barometer for the wider electric vehicle transition. The firm’s shift of some production to South Korea is viewed as a tactical move to navigate shifting global trade regulations regarding vehicles manufactured in China. By diversifying its production base and expanding its range into the estate and compact SUV sectors, the brand hopes to move toward profitability.

According to Polestar’s internal projections, the arrival of these four distinct models will provide the necessary variety to reach the 100,000-unit sales milestone. The chief executive stated that the focus remains on delivering cars that meet functional needs, such as the estate variant’s increased storage, while maintaining the brand's performance identity. The company confirmed that further technical specifications and UK-specific pricing for the Polestar 5 and the Polestar 4 estate variant would be released closer to their respective launch dates.
