The UK’s most scrapped car of 2025 has just been revealed - and for the first time in almost a decade, there’s a new name at the top. After eight straight years leading the list, the Ford Focus has finally been dethroned.
New data from Scrap Car Comparison shows the Vauxhall Astra has taken the crown after moving up one spot. The Focus isn’t far behind, though, slipping into second place.
Between January and December 2025, Astras made up 6% of all cars scrapped, with the Focus close behind at 5.6%. Another Vauxhall, the Corsa, came in third at 4.8%.
According to experts, most cars on UK roads last around 20 years, meaning many of today’s scrap cars were once the best sellers of the 2000s. That’s why models like the Focus, Astra, and Corsa have dominated the charts for years.
The Astra, which has sold over 2.8 million units since 1979, is the UK’s fifth best-selling car ever - so it’s no shock so many are now hitting the scrapyard.
The rest of the top 10 reads like a greatest-hits list of familiar models: the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Golf round out the top five, while the Peugeot 207 jumps three places to sixth. Next come the Vauxhall Zafira, Renault Clio, and Mini, with the Ford Transit breaking into the list for the first time in tenth, replacing the VW Polo.
Brand-wise, Vauxhall ruled 2025’s scrap charts with 18.5% of all cars scrapped, followed by Ford on 16.5%. After that came Peugeot (7.7%), Volkswagen (7%), and Renault (5.5%). Completing the top 10 were Citroen (4.8%), Nissan (3.8%), Toyota (3.5%), Honda (3.5%), and BMW (2.5%).
The average scrapped car last year clocked 131,700 miles, up from 123,359 in 2024 - roughly the same as 163 return trips from Edinburgh to London.
Two Scottish towns stood out for sending cars to the scrapheap earlier than most: Kilmarnock ranked fourth nationally, with cars scrapped at an average of 115,852 miles, and Kirkcaldy followed in eighth place at 119,560 miles.
Scrap Car Comparison’s Customer Service Manager, Matt Clamp, said it’s always fascinating to see which models top the list each year. He stated, "The likes of the Ford Focus, Vauxhall Corsa, and Vauxhall Astra have featured as the top three for many of these years, likely due to their popularity in the 2000s, as these cars may now be coming to the end of their useful life."
"However, it’s interesting to see which cars are a little more transient within the top flight, with the likes of the Peugeot 207 creeping up and the introduction of the Ford Transit."
“It’s always worth getting as much life out of a car as possible, but there does unfortunately come a time when this may no longer be viable. In such situations, car owners can choose to send their cars to scrap to reclaim some of the value and also rest easy in the knowledge that it’s being disposed of in a responsible manner, with 95 per cent of the mass of every vehicle recycled.”
