A report by The Sun has found London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, has handed out over £150m worth of contracts to debt collectors who have been tasked with retrieving over £255m of missing ULEZ fines.
Motorists have been unhappy about the rollout of the expanded ULEZ in London with drivers who don’t have a compliant vehicle being charged £12.50 per day to drive in Greater London.
The boundaries were extended to include the full Greater London region back in August of this year.
The debt collectors have been compiling lists of persistent evaders, even if they are living abroad who don’t ULEZ fines as well as parking tickets, the congestion charge and other motoring fines.
In the coming weeks, Transport for London (TfL) will issue rule-breakers with £180 fines, which could rise to £250. If paid within 14 days, it is reduced to £90.
The biggest single contract is worth £34.6million while another worth £117.2million has been spread out across three firms - debt recovery company Marston, enforcement agency Bristow and Sutor, and bailiffs JBW.
Tensions have been running increasingly high in the capital city with anti-ULEZ campaigners wilfully vandalising cameras to prevent them from working.
On campaigner took to TalkTV to boast how he has wrecked 150 cameras in the last eight weeks or so.
