Data has shown that almost 130,000 fines were incorrectly issued

TfL wrongly fined compliant motorists £23.1 million – have you been stung?

A whopping 128,577 fines have been proven to be incorrectly issued by TfL since the introduction of ULEZ in 2019.

If the fines were allowed to stand, over £23.1m would’ve been unnecessarily paid by motorists travelling with the ULEZ boundary.

The actual figure for incorrectly issued fines is expected to be significantly higher as the data only shows which ones were contested and overruled.

TfL admitted drivers of cars with missing emissions data will be hit with a £180 penalty charge notice (PCN) if they do not pay the £12.50-a-day Ulez charge, even if their car is compliant.

The current ULEZ rules says that cars should release less than 0.08g of nitrous oxide per kilometre.

This information has typically been recorded by manufacturers on Certificates of Conformity from the 1990s but the DVLA didn’t routinely start logging this until the mid-2000s. This has led to huge numbers of cars ultimately having a blank entry for this crucial piece of data during this time period.Sadiq Khan was widely criticised for expanding ULEZ in August of last year on the back of ‘falsehoods and exaggerations.’

Tory Mayoral candidate Susan Hall didn’t miss out on the opportunity to slate Sadiq Khan and TfL. She said; “Sadiq Khan's ULEZ expansion is nothing but a cash grab, which is why he has been using dodgy emissions data to wrongfully fine innocent people with compliant vehicles.

“Londoners deserve so much better than a Mayor who only cares about himself. As Mayor, I will end Sadiq Khan's war on motorists and scrap his unfair ULEZ expansion on day one.”
