New data from Kwik Fit reveals the top tyre-eaters in the UK

These cars burn through tyres the fastest – Is yours on the list?

Ever feel like you're constantly swapping out tyres? Turns out you might not be imagining it! New data from Kwik Fit has revealed which cars are the biggest tyre-eaters – and the results are pretty surprising.

The car models most in need of new tyres in each area of Britain

Ranking Model Number of areas where model topped the list for tyre changes
1 Tesla Model 3 54
2 Citroen Berlingo 24
3 Tesla Model Y 16
4 Mercedes CLA 9
5 Volvo XC40 7
6 BMW 4 Series 7
7 BMW 2 Series 5
8 Jaguar XE 4
9 Kia Niro 3
10 Skoda Karoq 3

Topping the list by a landslide is the Tesla Model 3. It’s the most tyre-hungry car in a whopping 54 areas across Britain—more than double the locations of the second-place vehicle. So, if you're a Model 3 owner, you might want to keep an extra set of tyres handy.

But why does the Model 3 wear tyres so fast? One big reason is its instant torque. Unlike petrol or diesel cars, electric vehicles (EVs) like the Model 3 deliver power instantly, which can be brutal on tyres. That, combined with its weight from heavy batteries, makes tyre wear a common issue.

Coming in second is the Citroen Berlingo, the popular van-turned-MPV, which leads in 24 areas. This one’s likely due to its high usage by delivery drivers and tradespeople who rack up serious mileage.

Third place belongs to another Tesla—the Model Y—showing that EVs really do take a toll on tyres. It’s followed by the Mercedes CLA, BMW 4 Series, and Volvo XC40.

Interestingly, tyre wear varies by location. London is the worst for Tesla Model 3 owners, with the car topping the list in 14 boroughs. Meanwhile, the Citroen Berlingo dominates more rural areas like Argyll and Bute and Wiltshire. The MG ZS struggles in Barking and Dagenham, while the Suzuki Alto tops the list in Dundee.

What Can You Do to Make Your Tyres Last Longer?

If you own one of these models, don’t panic—there are ways to extend the life of your tyres:

  • Check your tyre pressure regularly – underinflated tyres wear out much faster.
  • Get your wheel alignment checked – poor alignment can shred tyres in no time.
  • Drive smoothly – harsh acceleration and braking (we're looking at you, Tesla drivers) can dramatically increase wear.

At the end of the day, tyres are the only part of your car in contact with the road. Keeping them in good shape isn’t just about saving money—it’s about staying safe. So, whether you're rocking a Tesla, a Berlingo, or something else, stay on top of your tyre maintenance!
